Your body is a very fine instrument. Tune it regularly.
This will expose me, but I care more about helping others than appearing flawless. I have anxiety and it has been creating a lot of problems for me. Some of them are genuine blockers in my life.
We geeks are somewhat more prone to having anxiety, at least we used to be. One of the bigger sources of our anxiety is the lack of physical activity which is, partially, driven by our love for computers. Being glued to a screen for prolonged periods of time is not good. Lack of physical activity is directly linked to elevated episodes of anxiety and panic attacks. But it is reversible and it doesn’t take a lot of willpower.
The cure
Increase the dosage of the physical activity you are having. Don’t overdo it. If you have been doing literally nothing for years with your body then start walking. Walking 30 minutes every day will gain you big improvements in a matter of just one month.
If your willpower is incredibly low — get yourself a dog. Trust me, I know why I recommend this.
Until my next #MentalHealth post I wish you good health!
If this video and post resonated with you, share it with someone who you believe needs a motivational boost to start moving.
This is very true, a dog will get you out. Make sure it’s a nice one with few health issues though, some young adult mutt (or any kind of adult) would be my recommendation, that way you know what you are getting.
edit: I would also add cooking to the list of healthy activities Making nice food feels great.
I need to get better at this too. I need to stop drinking so much pop, or soda…or whatever you wanna call it. I’m trying to ween myself down from it, but I need to get on water a lot more.
Maybe you could try making lemonade or other home-made concoctions, these are often nicer, may take a fair bit of work to make and you will see how much sugar is going in there… plus you kinda feel like you gotta enjoy them more after all that effort. Oh and if you really want them to be fizzy there’s some shachets you can put in there that will fizz them up. Last year I made my own cola recipe with coffe, lemon, sugar, some nutty thing (not sure what any more) and honestly it wasn’t bad when really cold.
You will find me to be a light version of mental health advocate. I don’t pretend to be an expert on this topic nor do I place my fingers where they don’t belong. I just teach people Linux.
However, I do have personal experience which makes me want to give people heads-up in some ways that may help them. You are welcome to feel at home in my house, on this forum, but be mindful that everything is public. The core idea of a public forum is to be neatly organized and searchable.
There’s also such a thing as drinking too much water. I’ve learnt and am sharing with you, there’s a perfect balance, as with everything, requires your attention.
A general rule of thumb saya that 2L of water in a day should be “optimal” for an average grownup. However, I have a friend who drinks 8L per day so I suspect different body means different needs. I have been drinking less than 1L for many years and I have been trying to learn to drink more than 1L for the past few years. Regular sips help because I simply can’t swallow a lot at once.
I drink a lot but a looooooot of water when I stop drinking beer (I don’t drink any of other alcohol and I try to stop drinking). It’s a bit dissolving.. Sometimes I’m a bit worry about it because I heard that drinking to much water is not okay neither.
Yeah, I totally agree with you. I’m glad you encourage the people to touch some grass. Just like one person said (Justin Sung) - “There may be no magic pill to just suddenly feeling energized, but if there was it’s nature.” I actually recently started doing Yoga and breathing exercises and that helps A LOT too. I really hope you’ll get better with managing anxiety. I’ll keep you in my prayers, you can be sure of that
